Another top 10 for Kasey Kahne
Jimmie Johnson won the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at California Speedway which was called the Sharp Aquos 500 (250 laps, 500 miles) driving the #48 Hendrick Motorsports Lowe’s/Jimmie Johnson Foundation Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Jimmie led 84 laps, which wasn’t the most laps, but it included the most important last lap. When the checkered flag flew, he was 1.8 seconds ahead of Carl Edwards in the #99 Rousch Fenway Office Depot/Work Life Rewards Program Ford Fusion (top Ford). 3rd place went to Kyle Busch (who led 97 laps and that was the most) in the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Cheez-it/CARQUEST Chevy. 4th place went to Jeff Burton in the #31 RCR _____ Chevy (sponsor’s name omitted due to lawsuit-that’s right there was no sponsor on the car!) who also got to lead a lap. 5th place went to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. who was driving the #8 DEI Budweiser Chevy and Dale got to lead 15 laps. The rest of the top ten in order are #1 Martin Truex, Jr. (4 laps led), #17 Matt Kenseth, #83 Brian Vickers (top Toyota – 3 laps led), #2 Kurt Busch (pole sitter – 21 laps led, top Dodge), and #9 Kasey Kahne. 17 cars finished on the lead lap (California is a fast race track).
There were 11 caution flags for 43 laps, the last caution on lap 181 when Jeff Gordon ran the #24 car into the #36 Jeremy Mayfield and they hit #00 David Reutimann, #88 Ricky Rudd, #41 Reed Sorenson, and #38 David Gilliland.
This win is Jimmie Johnson’s fifth win of 2007, and it will put him it top contention for a 2nd consecutive NASCAR Nextel Cup title.
